Rev. Leslie G. McKoy (1942 - 2008), born in Kingston, Jamaica, W.I., stands as a figure of inspiration and dedication within our community. His journey of spiritual formation began at a tender age of fifteen at The Church of The Redeemer Moravian Church in Kingston. It was here that his pastor, Rev. Neville Neil, ignited his aspiration to embrace the pastoral call.
Answering this call, he embarked on his theological education at the United Theological College of the W.I., graduating in 1971 with a Diploma in Theological Training. This marked the commencement of an illustrious ministry career in Jamaica, marked by his commitment to the empowerment and holistic development of the communities he served.
Rev. McKoy further enriched his knowledge, earning a Bachelor’s and later a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from the University of The West Indies and The Columbia Theological Seminary, Columbia, GA, respectively. He then returned to Jamaica, contributing profoundly as Dean of Moravian Students and Director of Moravian Studies at the United Theological College of The West Indies.
In 1992, Rev. McKoy migrated to the United States, expanding his service in the fields of inner-city ministry and food pantry in Jacksonville, FL, before returning to assignments in Washington DC, The Bronx, NY, and Harlem, NY, within the Moravian Church. His distinguished service encompassed various roles, including service on The Eastern District Executive Board of The Moravian Church and Chair of The NY Moravian Ministers Association. He passionately engaged in numerous committees focusing on Stewardship and Evangelism and notably held the position of Vice Chairman at Christian Action For Renewal and Development (C.A.R.D).
Rev. McKoy's life embodies a relentless pursuit of educational excellence and spiritual development, inspiring the youth to realize their potential through education. His legacy of selfless devotion and his inspirational ethos are the foundations of the Rev. Leslie G. McKoy Scholarship. It is with great honor that C.A.R.D perpetuates his memory, championing the academic aspirations of our young people through this scholarship, a symbol of Rev. McKoy's noble and enduring impact.
